Mom Fights Girl, 12, on Long Island: Cops

A Long Island mom has been arrested and charged with allegedly encouraging two 12-year-old girls to duke it out during a dispute outside an elementary school -- and then participating in the fight herself.

Daphne Melin of Shirley has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and attempted assault.

Mary Jones, 11, goes to school with the two girls.

She said she saw "hair tugging and ripping and pushing and then the mom just started beating up the girl."

Police said the fight on Sunday lasted several minutes.

Melin "spit in the girl's face and then grabbed her by the hair and kneed her in the head several times," Suffolk police said.

Melin said her daughter was the victim of cyber-bullying and that she was getting no help from the school, so she took the matter into her own hands.

Kara Kennedy Allen, Daughter of Former Senator, Dies at 51

Kara Kennedy Allen, the daughter of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, died Friday while at a Washington-area health club. She was 51.  

Her death was reported by her brother, Patrick, the former Representative from Rhode Island, who told The Associated Press that “she’s with dad.” Their father died in August 2009.

Ms. Allen, the eldest of Mr. Kennedy’s children, led a more private life than most Kennedys of her generation. She was a shy person, who was able to go out in public without being recognized. But she also traveled with her father from time to time; in 1984, she went with him to a refugee camp in Ethiopia during a famine.

In 2003, Ms. Allen developed lung cancer, which some doctors deemed inoperable. But she found surgeons who were willing to proceed, and her cancer went into remission. In 2009, she accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom on his behalf of ailing father.

Scarlett Johansson Latest Female Celeb to Have Phone Hacked, Naked Pictures Leaked

 Back in March, TMZ published a list of female celebrities who had pictures and videos stolen from their mobile devices and email accounts by a group of hackers. Jessica Alba, Vanessa Hudgens and Miley Cyrus were mentioned in the probe -- with Hudgens even allegedly sitting down with the FBI to ascertain how her Gmail account was hacked. Scarlett Johannson was listed as well, though -- at the time -- scandalous photos of the Oscar-nominee had not yet leaked online. That changed Wednesday morning.

A pair of self-shot naked cell phone pictures featuring a woman who appears to look very much like Johansson are pinging around the Internet, which -- per TMZ -- may lead to the FBI being contacted because of the criminal nature of the potential hack.  The news was as shocking as it was cryptic: Popular Biggest Loser contestant Sam Poueu was seriously injured in a mysterious accident.

Now, his family and that of his fiancée Stephanie Anderson – a fellow ninth season contestant – are revealing to PEOPLE how he was hurt – and how he's finding the strength to recover.

The accident occurred on Sept. 3 in San Francisco when Poueu, after a night celebrating a friend's birthday at a dinner, went to the rooftop of another pal's apartment and the door locked behind him.

Poueu "attempted to climb down the fire escape ladder to drop down into the fourth floor balcony and slipped," the families say in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE. "The San Francisco Fire Department responded within minutes thanks to a neighbor's immediate call."

 Alyssa Milano was spotted looking very pregnant earlier this week leaving a gym, but now, she's tucked up, enjoying life as a new mom - the former "Who's The Boss?" actress has given birth.

Susan Powell Search Extends to Remote Desert

 Nearly two years after Susan Powell's disappearance, an army of investigators launched a high-profile search of abandoned mine shafts in the Nevada desert about 200 miles southwest of her Utah home.

Acting on what has been called "important" and "credible" new information, a total of 45 detectives and other investigators are scouring a remote region west of the town of Ely, Nev.

Wearing hard hats with lights, the searchers were seen rappelling into the old mine shafts throughout the day Friday.

After months of keeping a tight lid on details about the case, police in West Valley City, Utah, have been unusually open about the latest development and even invited the media to accompany searchers.

"Detectives have made a preemptive drive out here to see what we may be looking at," says Sgt. Mike Powell (no relation). "We felt that it was important to as much as we were able to involve the media in the process."

He did not say what investigators were looking for and where exactly the search would focus.

Susan Powell vanished in December 2009, and her husband, Joshua Powell – who initially refused to cooperate with authorities – told investigators he last saw her at their house southwest of Salt Lake City on the night of Sunday, Dec. 6, when he took their then 2- and 4-year-old sons for an overnight camping trip.

NEW DELHI: Anna Hazare courted arrest after being detained by Delhi Police at his residence in Mayur Vihar ahead of his indefinite fast on Tuesday.

Senior officers of Delhi Police reached Anna Hazare's flat early in the morning and informed him that he could not leave his home. However, Hazare turned down the request following which he was detained.

His doctor Bhupendra Gandhi says Kapoor was admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital two days ago in critical condition. He was on dialysis and died Sunday of kidney failure.

Kapoor was hailed for his lighthearted roles in movies. He belonged to Bollywood's well-known Kapoor family.

The Godfathers Of Film Take On 3-D

Scorsese, Coppola and Spielberg are coming out with 3-D movies—just as audiences are showing less interest in the pricey format.

When Francis Ford Coppola's first 3-D film, "Twixt," premieres next month at the Toronto Film Festival, audiences will be provided with 3-D glasses, but they aren't supposed to wear them for the whole movie. The legendary director of "The Godfather" movies, mindful that the funny spectacles can be uncomfortable for some viewers, decreed that an image should flash on the screen telling the audience when to put them on and take them off.
Three-D technology is at a critical juncture in Hollywood, its mixed track record leaving few clues as to whether it will be a transformative leap like talkies or color, a limited platform like Imax or little more than a doomed gimmick like Smell-O-Vision or Sensurround.

This fall, however, three godfathers of American cinema—Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Mr. Coppola—are releasing their first 3-D films. If their movies fall short, skepticism about the format could continue to spike. Or 3-D could clear an important hurdle—respectability.

"You now have some of the greatest filmmakers in the world stepping into the format to tell their stories," says Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks Animation chief executive and 3-D's most indefatigable evangelist..

Hypersonic Glider Loses Contact with US Military as Speed Test Takes Place [UPDATE: Statement Released]

In a bid to become the fastest plane in the world, the US Military has at least temporarily lost contact with prototype Falcon Hypsersonic Technology Vehicle (HTV-2) during its second test flight. This plane was designed as a global bombing prototype and was capable of a magnificent 20 times the speed of sound. This unmanned prototype plane was launched successfully today aboard a Minotaur IV rocket but was lost as the plane separated from the rocket in the upper bit of the atmosphere and began it’s “glide” phase. All of this is according to DARPA – Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of the USA.

We wrote about this impressive tip of arrow looking glider yesterday and expressed excitement over its second launch. The first time this project was tested, the ship crashed into the ocean and could not be recovered. As this launch had the possibility of being the final test of the plane because of the budget crunch hitting the Pentagon, those hoping for the success of this piece of technology are likely digging their fingernails into their kneecaps at the moment.

If the project can be salvaged at this point, and if the project is able to move forward, the HTV-X, or whatever it’s called at the time, will aim at reaching anywhere in the world in less than an hour to deliver bombs to targets specified by the US Military. Furthermore, if the plane were to, theoretically, need to travel from Los Angeles to New York to hit a target, it could do so in less than 12 minutes.

AMES, Iowa — A withering critique of President Obama’s handling of the economy was overshadowed by a burst of incivility among the Republican presidential candidates who gathered here for a debate on Thursday night and fought to stay alive in the party’s increasingly fractious nominating race.

The simmering animosity that has been building among some contenders broke into full view during the two-hour debate, with Representative Michele Bachmann defending her legislative accomplishments, her economic ideas and her experience to serve as president. She batted away the criticism, smiling at times and swinging at others, trying to prove she could take the heat.

While the first votes of the Republican nominating contest are six months away, a sense of urgency already hangs over the campaign. Several candidates face a far earlier test and are struggling to avoid being embarrassed at the Iowa straw poll on Saturday — the same day Gov. Rick Perry of Texas intends to declare his candidacy and join the Republican race.

Tim Pawlenty, a former Minnesota governor who is seeking to rejuvenate his campaign, repeatedly assailed Mrs. Bachmann’s record. He stood directly at her side and accused her of “making false statements” and having “a record of misstatements.”

Michael Schultz, an associate vice president for development at the school in Burlington, Vermont, accepted a severance package and departed on Wednesday, a university spokesman said on Thursday.

The school's board of trustees conducted a review of the relationship between Schultz and Rachel Kahn-Fogel, the president's wife and a volunteer in the fundraising office.

Schultz, who earned a doctorate after writing a dissertation on the proper role of a university president's spouse, had received numerous highly personal communications from Kahn-Fogel, over several years, according to the review.

Americas’ most famous polygamist was sentenced today for his previous convictions involving crimes against children at his Texas compound.

Warren Jeffs was given life in prison for his role in the assault of two young girls who he took as “wives.” The prosecutor said that Jeffs had “corrupted and perverted” his position as an authority in his religious organization in order to “satisfy his own appetites and desires.”
